Day 76: Final Stair Staining and Appliance Delivery

We received a few more of our appliances today.  The double oven shipment was refused because it was the wrong model but the microwave and gas cook top was received.

The stairs received their final coat of lacquer and are just beautiful.  They won't let us leave them as bare wood "due to liability" issues.  Honestly, covering up such beautiful wood is almost a criminal act.  Now that I see how chewed up the treads are from construction I see what "liability" they are talking about...it's having to pay to replace damaged treads.  I'm conflicted as to whether or not to just take the carpet runner out after closing.

We got an email today saying our ceiling fans had been discontinued and we were going to have to pick new ones.  We really won't know until the new ones go in, if it will be a big deal or not.  We had to select from a scanned copy of a photo graph...and the picture was just the fan without our lights on it.  I would say that although this "last minute" ordering is good for their bottom line, it is horrible for customer service and stress on our end.  We are so close to finishing and closing, I'm over these little things that would have sent me overboard even a month ago.  We are certainly overpaying for these fans but I'm not even considering doing a DIY fan install in the 2 story family room.  No sir, someone else can do that.

Based on what the PM is telling me...there will be absolutely nothing going on in our house until next week...and there was next to nothing going on today.  So now I know why they needed an extra 3 weeks beyond my projected completion date.  They were going to take a week off.  Bottom line, I may not have anything to write about until next week.

    1. The last minute change in the hardwoods could have been a disaster but I think we will weather the ceiling fans. It's slightly annoying but our house has turned out so beautiful, it's hard to be upset.

  3. Those stairs are gorgeous! It isa shame to cover them. I would love to de-carpet my stairs buti think they are dangerous for my little kiddo which may be the liability issue.

    1. Ours kids have slid down and had some tough falls on our carpeted stairs. There's is just no way around the fact that you just have to keep one hand for you and one for the rail. This is a variant on what we tell young Sailors on board ship. One for you and one for the ship.

  4. Wait, you have to have a carpet runner? Huh. Not sure about liability as an excuse. Are they issuing you oven mitts as well in case you burn yourself on your cooktop? Or is it for the contractors? We had our stairs unstained and covered with a tarp and wood pieces that kept it all in place. I can't understand why the only other option would be a carpet runner? Normally I wouldn't fret about things like that, but they have to nail the carpet runner down. I was firm about wanting hardwood stairs, because I absolutely loathe vacuuming stairs. We just bought machine-washable carpet treads for our arthritic dog to walk on. Sorry it will be quiet for a week! Can you distract yourself by furniture (window) shopping? :)

    1. I guess you pick your battles. I like to think we won more than we lost. The PM offered to have the installer use as few staples as possible so we won't have too many holes. We need to decide by next week.

We need a ton of furniture and have been trying to figure out how to take a phased approach and live with less than finished rooms. Patience is not one of virtues. :(

  5. I'm confused about the stairs also. We chose to leave ours hardwood, no runner... what liability are you talking about? In fact, it cost more to add the runner...

    1. I know. This has been a bit of an issue I've had is the inconsistency between regions.

  6. It all looks great. Ask if you can get some stain so if you have to patch a few holes you can. I am not sure about the runner. I like the look of the stairs but I can see it would wear well with the runner. Enjoy your week off from blogging and can't wait to see the final product.

  7. I have a direct set staircase in my new Ryan home and I took the carpet runner off immediately after closing. Ryan actually wanted to charge me more to not put in the carpet runner. If you are seriously thinking about going with bare wood for the stairs then start jumping all over Ryan right now so they do not install the carpet runner. The carpet installers just demolished a lot of my stairs and risers. I had to pull out 3-4 tack strips per stair, and they were nailed into the oak tread. Then there was ~30 -40 staples per stair in the jamb and under the riser lip. I ended up having to sand down all the stairs and risers. Then wood putty the areas where the installers could not nail straight and would just crush nails into the treads. Your stairs are to nice to let Rite Rug come in and do a piss-poor job of installing the runner.

Also as and FYI, I accidentally bumped a piece of door trim with the vacuum and the door trim fell apart. The door trim is particle board with a plaster like coating that give the moulding shape. I did not think they even made something so cheap.

    1. Thanks for all the great info. I guess we are going to have to make a tough choice on Monday. Either fight the fight or let it go.

  8. The stairs and the catwalk are BEAUTIFUL.. also I liked your choice of the metal balusters, we went with traditional white balusters, but now I wish we went with the decorative metal ones !!! Good luck with the carpet runner, we have one and they designed it very nicely to flow with the waterfall staircase at the bottom.

    1. I'm hoping they don't cover up too much of the beautiful wood.

  9. I dont know what it is about staircases that I find so sexy, its the 2nd favorite thing in a house..(masterbath is first) and yours is a FIFTY SHADES OF GREY kinda sexy. I just love them!! Its the centerpiece of your home and what an awesome choice..

    1. I agree. I wish it wasn't such a fight to just get what you want with RH. If I want to leave the carpet off the stairs I should be able to. They are so beautiful I just hate to cover them up.
